Playa Conchal: a beach made of crushed shell instead of sand
This page has not been translated yet — showing the English version.
Playa Conchal, in north Guanacaste, is a 1.5-kilometre beach made of crushed shell rather than sand — white, coarse, and hard on bare feet. The water is unusually clear and calm for this coast, with no permanent rip, though the bottom drops away steeply a couple of steps in. It is reached on foot: paved road to Brasilito, then an 800-metre walk south along the beach.

Why is Conchal white?
Because it is not sand. The beach is built from millions of crushed shell fragments, ground down over centuries against the reef offshore, which is also why the water above it is clearer than almost anywhere else on the Guanacaste coast — shell does not cloud the water the way fine sand does. It is the reason this beach appears on every "most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica" list, and the reason you want something on your feet.
How do you actually get onto the beach?
You walk. The road is paved as far as Brasilito, the village immediately north, and the sensible approach is to park there and walk 800 metres south along the sand. There is a vehicle track, but it needs high clearance, it is frequently closed, and it delivers you to the same place. Parking in Brasilito is free on the street or paid in a guarded lot.
Is it a good swimming beach?
Yes, with one thing to know: the drop-off. The water is calm and clear with no permanent rip, but it goes from ankle-deep to chest-deep in a couple of steps, which surprises people wading in with a small child. Conchal has carried a Bandera Azul rating for water quality. Snorkelling around the rocks at the northern end is worthwhile at high tide, when the water is at its clearest.
When should you go?
Early. Tour boats and day trips arrive through the morning and the northern end fills up; before nine it is a different beach. There is nothing on it beyond a few high-season vendors — food, shade and everything else are back in Brasilito.

Frequently asked questions
How do you get to Playa Conchal?
Drive to Brasilito on paved road — about 45 minutes from Liberia airport — and walk 800 metres south along the beach. There is a vehicle track that needs high clearance and is often closed; walking is quicker and more reliable. Parking in Brasilito is free on the street or paid in a guarded lot.
Is Playa Conchal good for snorkelling?
The rocks at the northern end are worth a look at high tide, when the water is clearest. The shell bottom means visibility is better here than on most Guanacaste beaches, but this is not a reef — expect fish and rock structure rather than coral gardens.
Is Playa Conchal really made of shells?
Yes. The beach is built from crushed shell fragments rather than sand, ground down against the offshore reef over centuries. It is coarse and sharp underfoot, and it is also why the water above it is unusually clear — shell does not cloud the water the way fine sand does.
