Playa Buena Vista: where Sámara goes when the bay is flat

Playa Buena Vista is a two-kilometre open beach eight kilometres north-west of Sámara, reached on an unpaved road with one shallow ford. Unlike Sámara it has no reef in front of it, so the swell arrives whole — which makes it the beach the town's surf schools drive to when the bay is flat, and a beach with a shore break that dumps close in. It is best two hours either side of low tide.

What is the difference between Buena Vista and Sámara?

The reef, and that is the whole of it. Sámara sits behind a line of rock that strips the energy out of the swell; Buena Vista, eight kilometres up the coast, faces open Pacific. The result is a beach that is wide, flat and hard-packed at low tide, with a wave that is small and workable on a calm day and a heavy dumping shore break on a big one.

That makes it the overflow beach for Sámara's surf schools. When the bay has nothing in it — which happens for weeks at a time in the dry season — the lessons move here.

What is the road like?

Unpaved from the edge of Sámara, and it includes one shallow ford. In the dry season it is a twenty-minute drive in any car. After a storm the ford is a real crossing and the sensible answer is to turn round; this is not a road to test a rental car's underside on.

Is it a good beach to swim at?

On a calm day, yes, with the same caution any open beach on this coast deserves: the shore break dumps close in and the sand shelves, so a wave that looks small can take your feet out from under you. There is no lifeguard. Two hours either side of low tide is when it is at its best — the break softens and the flat sand opens right up.

There is a beach bar in high season and horse rides along the sand. Otherwise the nearest anything is back in Sámara.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to Playa Buena Vista from Sámara?

North-west out of Sámara on the coast road, about 8 km and twenty minutes. The road is unpaved with one shallow ford, easy enough in the dry season in a normal car and impassable after heavy rain. There is no bus.

Is Playa Buena Vista good for beginner surfers?

On a small swell, yes — it is consistent, uncrowded and where Sámara's surf schools go when the bay has nothing in it. On a bigger swell the shore break is heavy and close in, which is not a beginner situation. Ask a school before going out alone.

Are there facilities at Playa Buena Vista?

Very few. A beach bar operates in high season and there are horse rides on the sand; there are no lifeguards, no shops and no reliable toilets. Bring water, and bring everything back out with you.
