Playa Guiones: seven kilometres of learner surf, with lifeguards

This page has not been translated yet — showing the English version.

Playa Guiones is a seven-kilometre beach at Nosara, about 75 minutes north-west of Sámara, and the beach where a large share of Costa Rica learns to surf. It has waves at every tide, sandbanks that shift after each swell, and rip currents between them — which is why it is one of very few beaches in the country with a lifeguard service. Swim between the flags.

Why is Guiones the beach everybody learns on?

Because it works every day. The sandbanks along seven kilometres of open beach produce a consistent waist-to-head-high break at any tide, so a lesson can be booked for Tuesday and actually happen on Tuesday — which is not true of most beaches on this coast. The wave is forgiving, the beach is long enough that a crowd disperses, and there are more surf schools per kilometre here than anywhere else in Guanacaste.

What about the rip currents?

They are the trade-off. The same sandbanks that make the wave also make channels between them, and water pushed over the banks goes back out through those channels. Guiones has a lifeguard service — funded locally, and one of a handful in the country — precisely because of this. Swim between the flags, and if you are surfing, ask which bank is running today rather than assuming last week's answer still holds.

What is Nosara like?

Different in character from Sámara, which is 35 km down the coast. Nosara is spread through the trees behind the beach rather than built along it, there is no beachfront strip, and the town's centre of gravity is yoga studios and surf rather than restaurants on the sand. Guiones has carried a Bandera Azul rating.

The direct coast road from Sámara through Garza is shorter and unpaved; the inland route via Nicoya is longer, paved and usually faster. There are several signed public accesses through the trees, each with a shaded clearing to park in.

Frequently asked questions

Does Playa Guiones have lifeguards?

Yes — it is one of very few beaches in Costa Rica with a funded lifeguard service, and it exists because the beach has rip currents between its sandbanks. Swim between the flags and ask the guards which bank is running before going out.

Is Playa Guiones good for beginners?

It is one of the best beginner beaches in the country. The break is consistent at every tide, waist-to-head-high most days, and forgiving; the seven-kilometre length means a busy day still leaves room. Book through one of the schools rather than paddling out alone on your first day.

How far is Nosara from Sámara?

About 35 km, but between 75 minutes and two hours depending on the route. The inland road via Nicoya is paved and usually faster; the direct coast road through Garza is shorter, unpaved and slower, and worse after rain.
